For rising musical-theatre star Z (Breton Lalama), auditions are no longer the same. After transitioning to a trans-masculine identity, Z finds himself grappling with the loss of his once-phenomenal voice and vocal range. Singing has always been his greatest joy, but now he must navigate a new vocal register and find his way forward—not backward. His loving partner, Danelle (Khadijah Roberts-Abdullah), wants to support him, but she also dreams of moving to New York, complicating their journey together.

In the face of uncertainty, Z takes a job as a barback, where he forms an unexpected and supportive friendship with Santi (Xavier Lopez), who manages the bar. Determined not to give up on his musical dreams, Z begins training with a gifted vocal coach—a decision that brings new challenges and emotional hard work.

Through it all, director J. Stevens, with a personal lens, captures Z’s conflicted journey with humor, depth, and, ultimately, joy. As Z transitions into a voice that reflects who he is now, the story becomes a celebration of resilience, self-discovery, and newfound identity.  – KM
