In 1960s Liverpool, Brian Epstein is a young man looking to expand his family’s record business and manage artists himself. One night he goes into a decrepit cellar to discover a popular underground band he believes has potential. That band is The Beatles and Epstein becomes the secret ingredient that changes pop music forever.

Epstein’s underappreciated legacy is explored in Joe Stephenson’s Midas Man, a charming and touching biopic about the influential “fifth” Beatle. Stephenson provides a detailed portrait of not only Epstein’s rise to be one of the world’s most powerful music managers, but also the struggles Epstein faced – whether professional, keeping the band together, or personal, as a closeted queer man in the 1960s.  The film is like any great Beatles track, it finds ways to explore deeper truths, while never losing the sense of joy that music brings.

Brought to life by an ensemble cast that includes Jacob Fortune-Lloyd (Queen’s Gambit), Eddie Marsan and Academy-award nominee Emily Watson, Midas Man hits all the right notes in giving Epstein his deserved moment in the sun.  JD
