Juan is a shy and sloppy fifty-year-old man who works as a prison officer. Through the safety monitors, he silently observes every Sunday the visit of Berta, the mother of one of the inmates. Even though they have never spoken, he begins to feel an attraction to her. Berta spends most of her time enclosed at home, taking care of her sick husband, who has been bedridden for years. The day he finally approaches her, he conveys a piece of news that eventually will change her world, and his. The film was nominated for Best New Director and Best Actress (Emma Suaréz) at the Goya competition.

The 12^th  Latin American and Spanish Film Week is sponsored by the Department of Hispanic and Italian Studies, the Faculties of Humanities, Social Sciences and Fine Arts, and the Latin American Studies Program at the University of Victoria. It also receives support from the CRD Arts Development Service, BC Arts Council and a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

The event is organized by the Hispanic Film Society of Victoria, which aims to promote the cultural diversity of Latin America and Spain in our community, as well as raising awareness of relevant social and political issues, through the medium of film.
