Director Brady Corbet announces his intentions from the start in “The Brutalist.” A man emerges from the chaos of an overcrowded ship arriving in New York in 1947, escaping the dark, disorienting hold into the sunlight. From the way he’s standing, we see what he sees: the Statue of Liberty, only upside down. Talk about making a statement. Such a bold move can go either way. Corbet’s goes only one way: headlong into a genuine American epic, a big movie with big ideas and big things to say about what it is to be an artist, what it is to be a survivor, what it is to be an immigrant, what it is to be an American. It’s 3 hours and 35 minutes long (including a 15-minute intermission), and while it’s full and complete, it never drags or feels padded. It is, simply put, a great movie. – AZ Central

“I emerged from this movie light-headed and euphoric, dizzy with rubbernecking at its monumental vastness.” – Guardian
